DNS: The Silent Tracker and Your Final Line of Defense

Every time you type a website name into your browser, your device sends a request to a Domain Name System (DNS) server to translate that name into an IP address. Think of DNS as the “phonebook” of the internet. By default, this phonebook is managed by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), which means they can see and log every single domain you visit.

In our journey to Keep Distance, taking control of your DNS is the most effective way to block tracking before it even leaves your device.

1. Why Your Default DNS is a Privacy Violation

Traditional DNS queries are unencrypted and sent over open channels. This creates several “Distance” breaches:

  • ISP Logging: Your ISP sees every query and can build a complete profile of your browsing history, even if you use HTTPS.
  • Government Surveillance: In many jurisdictions, governments can mandate that ISPs log and store these DNS records for years.
  • Public Wi-Fi Snooping: On shared networks (like hotels or airports), anyone monitoring the connection can see your DNS traffic.
  • DNS Manipulation: Attackers can intercept your request and redirect you to a malicious “spoofed” version of a site without your knowledge.

2. Choosing Your “Distance” Protocol: DoH vs. DoT

To secure your DNS, you must move from plaintext to encrypted protocols. There are two primary standards in 2026:

3. Recommended Defensive Resolvers

Switching to a privacy-focused resolver is the simplest way to gain control. Here are the top picks for 2026:

  • NextDNS: The “Gold Standard” for advanced users. It allows you to create a personalized dashboard to block ads, trackers, and malicious domains across your entire network.
  • Quad9 (9.9.9.9): A non-profit based in Switzerland. It automatically blocks known malicious domains using real-time threat intelligence and maintains zero logs of your IP address.
  • Cloudflare (1.1.1.1): Recognized as the fastest public DNS. While a massive corporate entity, they promise to delete all logs within 24 hours and offer “Oblivious DoH” (ODoH) for maximum anonymity.
  • AdGuard DNS: An excellent choice for users who want to block ads and trackers at the DNS level without installing any additional software or browser extensions.

4. The “No-Fly Zone” Setup

To fully implement this in your defensive stack, don’t just set it on your browser. Implement it at the source:

  1. Router Level: If you followed our previous guide on Travel Routers, configure your router to use NextDNS via DoT. This protects every device in your house, including Smart TVs and IoT devices.
  2. The Kill Switch: Ensure your resolver is set to fail closed. If your encrypted DNS connection cannot be established, your device should not fall back to the ISP’s plaintext DNS.
  3. Local Isolation: For the ultimate “Distance” move, consider running a Pi-hole or AdGuard Home on a Raspberry Pi. This allows you to block trackers locally before they ever leave your front door.
